Accepting the government of Meghalaya’s request, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has allowed the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) to hold the final semester exams in October. The state Education Minister, Lahkmen Rymbui, on Thursday said the UGC has agreed to the Meghalaya government's proposal, saying, “NEHU will conduct exam as proposed on 7, 9, 12, 14 & 16 October 2020. Results will be declared by the end of October 2020. University will issue routine accordingly.”
The Meghalaya government had written to the UGC in the first week of this month on the issue. In response, the UGC said, “Keeping in view the health and safety of the students and also in the larger interest of their academic progression. The UGC has decided to accede to your request. Accordingly, the final year/terminal semester exams in colleges & universities in the State of Meghalaya will be completed by 16.10.2020.”
According to the revised guidelines of UGC, all the universities in the country have to complete the final semester exams by September. And in support of this decision, the Supreme Court also ruled that states and universities cannot promote students without terminal semester or final year exams.
